Writing:
Writing workshop is a process where students will develop their individual writing abilities, focus on finding their writing voice, and integrate skills learned in the reading program to improve the quality of their writing. Students will practice writing in many genres, including personal narratives, fictional narratives, expository nonfiction, persuasive nonfiction, and poetry. Students will write regularly in a writer’s notebook, both writing to specific prompts and free writing. Students will keep writing portfolios throughout the year and reflect on their growth as a writer within each genre unit. Mechanics skills, such as punctuation and grammar, will be taught, practiced, and assessed in context of writing. Spelling and vocabulary will be integrated.
Grading:
Writing will be graded on a holistic 4 point rubric.
In general,
· 4 = the writing piece has exceeded expectations.
· 3 = the writing piece has met expectations.
· 2 = the writing piece did not meet expectations.
· 1 = the writing piece did not show enough writing/effort in to be graded.
· 0 will only be given when an assignment is not completed after multiple reminders and chances given.
